Kiwano Melon (Cucumis metuliferus) – Offered by Ferme Tourne-Sol

The Kiwano melon , also called the African horned cucumber , is a botanical curiosity that does not go unnoticed in the garden! With its green thorny fruits that turn orange-yellow when ripe , it intrigues as much as it seduces. Its lime-green flesh , gelatinous and refreshing, offers a unique flavor combining notes of grape, banana and cucumber . Very popular in Africa and New Zealand, this exotic fruit is as decorative as it is surprisingly delicious .

Type : Annual climbing plant
Plant habit : Creeping or climbing (needs support)

Cultivation method

Kiwano likes heat and is grown in full sun , in rich, well-drained, slightly sandy soil. Start seedlings indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , then transplant into the ground when night temperatures are above 15°C . Sow directly into the ground after the last frost if the climate is warm enough. Space the plants 80 cm to 1 m apart and provide a trellis or support , as Kiwano is a good climber. Regular and moderate watering is recommended, while avoiding overwatering. Harvest when the fruits turn from green to orange-yellow , a sign that they are ready to eat.

Use and benefits

Kiwano is a surprising and refreshing fruit, ideal to be eaten with a spoon, added to fruit salads or mixed into smoothies and cocktails . Its slightly tangy and tropical taste goes well with citrus fruits and honey. It is rich in vitamins C and B6, magnesium and antioxidants , contributing to hydration and vitality .

With its alien look, exotic taste and easy cultivation , the Kiwano melon is a must-try for any curious gardener!
