description
Mizuna (Brassica rapa), offered by Ferme Tourne-Sol
Mizuna is a delicate and versatile Japanese leafy green , recognizable by its finely serrated leaves and slightly peppery, yet mild and balanced, flavor . Highly prized for its tender texture and freshness, it's perfect in salads , but also lends itself very well to quick stir-fries , soups, and Asian bowls.
Extremely fast-growing and cold-tolerant , mizuna is ideal for continuous harvests from spring to autumn, and even into early winter with light protection. Its ability to regrow after cutting and its reliable growth make it a must-have in northern vegetable gardens and organic gardens.
Type: Annual leafy vegetable
Plant habit: Low and spreading clump
Plant height: Approximately 20 to 30 cm
Quantity per packet: 500 seeds
Maturity: Approximately 30 days
Family: Brassicaceae
Uses: Salads, stir-fries, soups, Asian cuisine
Companion plants: Lettuce, spinach, radish, carrot, peas
Negative plants: Other brassicas in the same location (rotation recommended)
Farming method
Mizuna can be sown directly outdoors throughout the season , as soon as the soil can be worked. It tolerates frost well , allowing for very early spring sowings and late autumn sowings. Plant in well-drained, moderately fertile soil , in full sun to partial shade .
For a continuous production of tender young leaves, sow seeds every 1 to 2 weeks . Maintaining consistent moisture promotes a softer texture and reduces bitterness. Harvest leaf by leaf or by cutting the entire plant, as it regrows quickly.
Uses and benefits
Mizuna is excellent raw , where its mild spiciness enhances salads, but also when briefly cooked , where it becomes soft and tender. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, it brings freshness and nutritional value to everyday meals.
Growing mizuna means choosing a fast-growing, generous and incredibly adaptable green, perfect for extending the harvest season and varying the flavors of the vegetable garden.
