description
Organic Tatsoi ‘Asian Green’ (Brassica rapa subsp. narinosa) is a fast-growing, ornamental Asian leafy green prized for its compact rosettes of glossy, dark green, tender leaves. Its low-growing habit, reaching approximately 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) in height, fits perfectly into vegetable gardens, edible landscapes, raised beds, and containers. Its mild, slightly mustard-like flavor combines the delicate taste of spinach with Asian cabbage, making it equally delicious fresh or cooked. Young leaves can be harvested as early as three weeks after sowing, while full rosettes are generally ready between 21 and 45 days.
Organic Tatsoi ‘Asian Green’ is direct sown outdoors or in containers from April to September in cool, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil. It prefers cool temperatures between 10 and 20°C (50 to 68°F), as well as full sun or partial shade, especially during warmer weather. Sow seeds about 0.5 cm (1/4 in) deep, then thin seedlings to 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) apart to encourage well-developed rosettes. Maintain consistent soil moisture without waterlogging, as regular watering keeps the leaves tender, supports vigorous growth, and helps delay bolting.
In the garden, Organic Tatsoi ‘Asian Green’ is ideal for spring and fall crops, kitchen gardens, family vegetable gardens, and 10 to 15 L (2.5 to 4 gal) containers on patios or balconies. It grows well alongside tomatoes and beans, while avoiding proximity to strawberries and radishes whenever possible. Harvest leaves individually or cut entire rosettes for salads, stir-fries, soups, steamed dishes, and baby leaf mixes. If a few plants are allowed to flower, their small yellow blooms attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, contributing to biodiversity in the vegetable garden.
