Hybrid Yew 'New Selection'

Yew 'New Selection' (Taxus × media 'New Selection'). Taxus × media 'Sunburst', commonly known as Sunburst Yew, is an evergreen conifer with a spreading, dense habit, remarkable for the bright coloration of its new growth. In spring, the young needles emerge a vibrant golden yellow before gradually turning chartreuse and then dark green as they mature, creating a dynamic contrast throughout the season. Its broad, slightly irregular silhouette makes it an excellent choice for beds, foundation plantings, or colorful low hedges.

To plant Yew 'New Selection', choose a suitable exposure: full sun to partial shade. The recommended soil is well-drained, tolerating ordinary soil. Respect the conifer's natural silhouette and avoid cutting deeply into areas without foliage. Monitor moisture after planting, including in the fall when the weather is dry. Aeration and drainage are as important as watering frequency. Water the root ball before planting it in the ground and ensure water can drain after planting. During establishment, check moisture by hand before watering again.

Allow a width of 1.5 m (5 ft) when planning the plant's placement in the garden. The indicated height of 2.5 m (8 ft) helps choose its position relative to neighboring plants. Maintain access to the base for weeding, checking moisture, and removing damaged parts. Pair this variety with plants that have compatible light and water needs. If you are considering a container, first check that its volume and drainage are suitable for root development. Roots in pots are more exposed to cold than those planted in the ground.
