description
Organic Black Krim Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an heirloom, indeterminate annual variety originating from Crimea, prized for its large dark red fruits with deep purplish-brown tones that can appear almost black at full maturity. The vigorous plant reaches approximately 1.8 to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) in height and produces abundant harvests when supported by a sturdy stake or heavy-duty cage. Its dense, juicy flesh delivers a rich, complex flavor with a subtle salty note that has made it one of the most celebrated heirloom tomatoes among gourmet gardeners. Both ornamental and delicious, Black Krim is a standout choice for gourmet salads, sandwiches, tomato platters, and thick summer slices.
Organic Black Krim Tomato should be started indoors from March to April, about 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost in Canada. Seeds germinate best between 21 and 27°C (70 to 81°F) in a light, fertile, well-drained growing mix. Transplant seedlings into individual pots after several true leaves develop, then gradually harden them off before planting outdoors or into very large containers. Grow plants in full sun in deep, organic-rich, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil. Deep, regular, and consistent watering combined with organic mulch promotes premium fruit quality while reducing moisture fluctuations that can lead to cracking.
In the garden, Organic Black Krim Tomato is ideal for family vegetable gardens, heirloom collections, and very large 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in) diameter containers on sunny patios. It grows well alongside basil, chives, and parsley, while avoiding proximity to potatoes, fennel, and kohlrabi whenever possible. Its yellow flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, supporting biodiversity and improving fruit set. Harvest tomatoes about 80 days after transplanting, once they develop their characteristic dark coloration and become slightly soft to the touch.
