description

Organic Cherokee Purple Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an heirloom indeterminate annual variety famous for its large, slightly flattened fruits with a rich reddish-purple color and classic old-fashioned appearance. In the vegetable garden, it stands out with its deep coloration and vigorous growth, adding remarkable ornamental value among other tomato varieties. Its dense, juicy flesh delivers a rich, complex flavor with a hint of sweetness, making it one of the most sought-after heirloom tomatoes for fresh eating. It is exceptional in salads, sandwiches, thick slices, or simply served fresh on summer plates. Vigorous plants reach approximately 1.8 to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) and generally mature 75 to 85 days after transplanting.

Organic Cherokee Purple Tomato should be sown indoors from February to April, about 0.5 cm (1/4 in) deep, at a constant temperature of 21 to 27°C (70 to 81°F). Germination usually takes 7 to 14 days when seedlings receive adequate warmth and light. After the last frost, hardened-off plants can be transplanted into full sun in fertile, organic-rich, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil. It also performs well in large, deep containers. A sturdy stake or heavy-duty tomato cage is essential to support its vigorous growth and large fruits, along with regular watering and balanced fertilization throughout the season.

In the edible garden, Organic Cherokee Purple Tomato is an outstanding choice for family vegetable gardens, gourmet gardens, and edible landscapes where gardeners want to grow an exceptional heirloom tomato. Its richly colored fruits become a striking focal point in both the garden and on the plate while providing abundant harvests for fresh eating. Basil, chives, and parsley make excellent companion plants, while rotating tomatoes with other nightshades helps reduce common soil-borne problems. Its yellow flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, supporting excellent fruit set and increasing biodiversity throughout the vegetable garden.
