description

Organic Italian Tomato ‘Amish VF’ (Solanum lycopersicum) is a vigorous, highly productive indeterminate heirloom annual variety valued for its elongated, meaty, flavorful red fruits. In the vegetable garden, it offers a generous presence with plants reaching 1.8 to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) and abundant harvests from midseason until the first frosts. Its dense, low-moisture, richly flavored flesh makes it an ideal tomato for homemade sauces, passata, preserves, stews, and cooking. The fruits can also be enjoyed fresh when fully ripe, with maturity usually around 85 days after transplanting.

Organic Italian Tomato ‘Amish VF’ should be sown indoors from March to April, about 0.5 cm (1/4 in) deep, at a steady temperature of 21 to 27°C (70 to 81°F). Germination usually takes 7 to 14 days when seedlings receive proper warmth and light. After the last frosts, hardened-off plants can be transplanted into full sun, in cool, fertile, organic-rich, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil. It can also be grown in a large, deep container on a sunny patio. A sturdy stake, regular watering, organic mulch, and balanced fertilization, especially during fruiting, encourage abundant, high-quality harvests.

In the edible garden, Organic Italian Tomato ‘Amish VF’ is an excellent choice for family vegetable gardens, productive gardens, and edible landscapes focused on home preserving. Its high productivity makes it perfect for thick sauces, preserves, and flavorful passata, while still providing fresh fruit throughout summer. Basil, chives, and parsley are good companion plants, while rotation with other nightshades helps reduce certain crop health issues. Its yellow flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, supporting good fruiting and beneficial biodiversity in the vegetable garden.
