Discover the plant
Organic red ‘Sweetie’ cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum ‘Sweetie’) is an open-pollinated organic, indeterminate, vigorous, and highly productive variety. Long trusses generally carry many small round smooth glossy-red fruit, often in clusters of 15 to 20. Juicy flesh, thin skin, and high sugar content create an intensely sweet flavour balanced by gentle freshness. The 10 to 20 g fruit is excellent straight from the garden, in salads and appetizers, in lunch boxes, or lightly roasted.
Sow indoors six to eight weeks before last frost approximately 0.5 cm deep in warm evenly moist mix. Provide strong light immediately after emergence, pot up after true leaves appear, and harden gradually. Transplant after frost in full sun into fertile organic-rich well-drained soil. Its indeterminate habit may approach 1.8 to 2 m and requires a tall cage trellis or sturdy stakes; allow enough spacing to maintain good airflow.
Water slowly and deeply at soil level when the surface begins to dry, then mulch after the soil warms to stabilize moisture. Feed moderately without excess nitrogen and tie stems as they lengthen. Harvest generally begins in midseason around 65 to 75 days after transplanting depending on conditions. Pick fruit when fully red slightly yielding and easy to release. Harvest frequently to support production and discard mouldy slimy deeply split or abnormal-smelling tomatoes.
