description
Organic Beefy Red Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an indeterminate annual beefsteak-type variety grown for its large, red, meaty, firm, and flavorful fruits. The vigorous plant can reach 180 to 240 cm (6 to 8 ft) in height and produces over a long period when properly staked and maintained. Its generous tomatoes, often around 340 to 400 g, offer dense, juicy flesh that is ideal for thick slices. In the vegetable garden, this variety impresses with both its productivity and ornamental value, with yellow flowers followed by abundant harvests of red fruits, perfect for salads, sandwiches, and summer platters.
Organic Beefy Red Tomato should be sown indoors from March to April, about 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost in Canada. Seeds germinate well at warm temperatures between 22 and 28°C (72 to 82°F), in a light, fertile, well-drained growing mix. Transplant young seedlings once they have several true leaves, then gradually harden them off before planting outdoors in full sun. Set plants in organic-rich, slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a sturdy stake or cage installed at planting. Deep, regular, and even watering helps reduce cracking and supports the development of large, high-quality fruits.
In the garden, Organic Beefy Red Tomato is ideal for family vegetable gardens, edible gardens, and very large 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in) diameter containers on sunny patios. It grows well alongside basil, chives, and parsley, while avoiding proximity to potatoes, fennel, and kohlrabi whenever possible. Its yellow flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, supporting vegetable garden biodiversity and better fruiting. Harvest tomatoes about 75 days after transplanting, once they are fully red and slightly soft to the touch.
