description
Organic Brandywine Black Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an heirloom, indeterminate annual variety prized for its large beefsteak-type fruits in dark reddish-brown to purple tones. Its potato-leaf foliage, vigorous habit, and height of up to 180 to 240 cm (6 to 8 ft) give it a remarkable presence in the vegetable garden. The fruits, which can approach 454 g, offer dense, juicy, intensely flavorful flesh with rich, complex, slightly sweet aromas. Both decorative and delicious, this collector’s tomato is ideal for salads, sandwiches, tasting platters, and thick slices served fresh.
Organic Brandywine Black Tomato should be sown indoors from March to April, about 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost in Canada. Seeds germinate best in warmth, between 22 and 28°C (72 to 82°F), in a light, fertile, well-drained growing mix. Transplant young seedlings once they have several true leaves, then gradually harden them off before transplanting into full sun. Plant in organic-rich, slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a sturdy stake or strong cage installed at planting. Deep, regular, and even watering, combined with mulch, supports fruit quality and helps reduce cracking.
In the garden, Organic Brandywine Black Tomato belongs in edible vegetable gardens, heirloom collections, and very large 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in) diameter containers on sunny patios. It grows well alongside basil, chives, and parsley, while avoiding proximity to potatoes, fennel, and kohlrabi whenever possible. Its yellow flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, supporting vegetable garden biodiversity and good fruiting. Harvest fruits about 80 days after transplanting, once they become dark-colored and slightly soft to the touch.
