Acidanthera 'Murielae'

Abyssinian Gladiolus ‘Murielae’ (Acidanthera bicolor ‘Murielae’) is an elegant bulbous plant that produces long, slender stems bearing luminous white, star-shaped flowers accented by a deep purple centre. Its soft green, lance-shaped foliage forms a graceful base, while the flower stems, reaching 80 to 100 cm in height, add lightness and vertical interest to garden displays. This Murielae Abyssinian gladiolus blooms successively from August to September and releases a sweet fragrance that is especially noticeable on warm evenings. Not very hardy in our climate, Abyssinian gladiolus bulbs must be protected from frost, but their refined late-season flowers are well worth the extra care.
For proper Abyssinian gladiolus care, plant the corms in spring once the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed. Set them 8 to 10 cm deep and space them 10 to 15 cm apart. Abyssinian gladiolus Acidanthera prefers a warm, very sunny location and rich, light, perfectly drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth without allowing it to become waterlogged, then reduce watering once the foliage begins to yellow. An application of compost or balanced fertilizer at the beginning of the season encourages abundant flowering. Before the first frost, dig up the corms, allow them to dry, and store them in a cool, dry location.
Abyssinian gladiolus is beautiful in mixed flower beds, sunny borders, large containers, and cutting gardens. Growing Abyssinian gladiolus in pots is also an excellent option, provided the container offers good drainage and receives plenty of sunlight. Its airy silhouette pairs especially well with dahlias, gaura, tall verbena, and ornamental grasses, which highlight its delicate flowers without making the composition feel heavy. Planted near a patio, walkway, or seating area, it allows its fragrance to be fully enjoyed at the end of the day. Its flowers also attract bees and other pollinators. Carried on long, elegant stems, they make excellent fresh-cut flowers and add a refined touch to floral arrangements.
