description
Bulgarian Allium (Nectaroscordum siculum subsp. bulgaricum, formerly Allium bulgaricum) is a distinctive bulbous perennial that produces delicate clusters of nodding creamy-white bells tinged with pink and green from May to June. Carried on flexible stems reaching 60 to 80 cm in height, the graceful Allium bulgaricum flowers sway gently in the breeze and add movement, lightness, and refinement to garden displays. Its discreet blue-green foliage allows the unusual flowers to take centre stage. Hardy to Zone 4, Allium bulgaricum Nectaroscordum reliably returns when grown in well-drained soil and can gradually naturalize to form charming colonies over the years.
Plant Allium bulgaricum bulbs in fall at a depth of approximately 10 cm, spacing them 10 to 15 cm apart. For proper Allium bulgaricum care, choose a location in full sun or bright partial shade with light, fertile, and perfectly drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Water lightly after planting, then moderately during active growth, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Once established, this Allium siculum bulgaricum tolerates dry periods well but does not tolerate heavy, waterlogged soil, especially during winter. A light application of compost in spring is sufficient. Always allow the foliage to dry completely before removing it so the bulbs can replenish their reserves.
Nectaroscordum siculum bulgaricum is ideal for naturalistic flower beds, rock gardens, borders, pollinator gardens, and well-drained containers. Its graceful silhouette pairs especially well with foxgloves, columbines, peonies, catmint, and ornamental grasses, which highlight its informal, country-style appearance. Rich in nectar, its bell-shaped flowers attract bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial insects, helping support garden biodiversity. The flower clusters also last very well in a vase, while the dried Allium siculum bulgaricum flower heads remain decorative and add a natural, refined touch to floral arrangements.
