Discover the plant
Trailing begonia (Begonia × tuberhybrida ‘Double Pendula Pink’) creates a romantic cascade of double pink flowers on fleshy, arching stems. Blooms with numerous petals stand out against glossy, asymmetrical green foliage and continue developing throughout summer. Van Noort’s size 6/+ tuber produces a plant approximately 30 cm (12 in) high and 20 cm (8 in) wide. Its trailing habit is especially well suited to hanging baskets. Hardy only in Zones 9 to 11, it is grown as a seasonal plant in Canada and its tuber must be stored in frost-free conditions.
Wake the tuber indoors eight to twelve weeks before the last frost in an airy mix maintained near 15 to 18°C. Set the hollow surface upward close to the top, then moisten sparingly until shoots develop. After leaves form, transplant into a freely draining basket, harden it gradually, and move the plant outside when nights remain above 10°C. Bright partial shade, fertile mix kept consistently moist, light fertilizer applications, and shelter from gusts support continuous flowering without encouraging rot. Direct water onto the mix rather than into the tuber’s depression or across the foliage.
Hang this begonia beneath a porch, on a balcony, or in a shaded courtyard so its pink flowers can be viewed from the front and below. Combine it with silver, burgundy, or lime foliage and several white or blue flowers without overcrowding the basket. Double blooms are ornamental rather than edible, and plant tissues contain oxalates that can irritate people and animals. Before frost, reduce watering, allow stems to yellow, dry the tuber, and store it in darkness near 7°C until the next growing cycle begins. Proper storage preserves the tuber for another summer display.
