Discover the plant
De Caen Mixed Anemone (Anemone coronaria ‘De Caen Mixed’) produces a profusion of large, single flowers from April to June in vibrant shades of red, pink, blue, violet, and white. Their satiny petals and contrasting centres stand out beautifully against finely divided, soft green foliage. Reaching 25 to 30 cm in height, this rhizomatous perennial forms elegant clumps that quickly brighten spring landscapes. Hardy to Zone 6, it requires winter protection in many parts of Quebec, but its abundant and varied flowering makes it an outstanding choice for colourful gardens.
Soak the rhizomes in lukewarm water for several hours before planting to encourage faster establishment. In Quebec, plant them in spring after the last frost, approximately 5 cm (2 in) deep and 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) apart. This anemone prefers full sun or bright partial shade and light, fertile, evenly moist, perfectly drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Water regularly during active growth without allowing the soil to become waterlogged. A light application of compost or balanced fertilizer at planting is generally sufficient. Remove faded flowers to prolong blooming, then allow the foliage to dry naturally.
Ideal for spring flower beds, borders, large containers, and cutting gardens, this anemone creates an especially spectacular effect when planted in groups. It pairs beautifully with tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths, forget-me-nots, and ranunculus to create vibrant, refined spring displays. Its flowers attract bees and many other pollinating insects while producing excellent stems for fresh bouquets. In colder regions, protect the rhizomes with a thick layer of mulch or overwinter containers in a cool, frost-free location.
