Planting 'Melon Mist' dahlias
When to plant
March to May , after all risk of frost.
Open ground method
1Choose a sunny location.
2Loosen the soil and enrich it with compost.
3Plant the tubers 10 cm (4") deep , spaced 50 cm (20") apart.
4Water after planting , then maintain regular humidity.
Jar method
Use a large container (minimum 40 cm deep).
Plant the tubers and supplement with a rich substrate.
Place in full sun and water regularly.
Tip : For earlier flowering, you can pre-germinate the tubers indoors 4 weeks before planting.
Maintenance and wintering
Dahlias are not hardy in cold climates (zone 7 and below).
What to do after flowering
1In mild climates : Leave in the ground and mulch for the winter.
2In cold climates : Dig up the tubers after the first frosts , let them dry for a few days, then store them in a cool, dry place until the following spring.
Cut off faded flowers to prolong flowering and stimulate new growth.
