Collarette Mix Dahlia (Dahlia pinnata ‘Collarette Mix’) is a colourful blend of collarette dahlias distinguished by their unusual flowers, with broad outer petals surrounding a ring of shorter inner petals. Shades of red, pink, yellow, orange, white, and various bicolour combinations create a lively, ever-changing display from July until the first frost. Dense, dark green foliage provides a rich backdrop that enhances the brilliance of the flowers. Growing 60 to 80 cm (24 to 32 in) tall, these plants bring colour, movement, and lightness to summer landscapes. Not hardy in Canada, the tubers should be overwintered in a frost-free location.
Plant the tubers in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has thoroughly warmed, approximately 10 cm (4 in) deep. Choose a location in full sun with rich, loose, humus-rich, well-drained soil, spacing plants 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 in) apart. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged. Fertilize every two to three weeks with a fertilizer high in potassium, while avoiding excessive nitrogen. Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage new flower buds. Lift the tubers before the first autumn frost and store them in a cool, dry, frost-free location until spring.
Collarette Mix Dahlia is ideal for colourful garden beds, flowering borders, large containers, and pollinator-friendly gardens. Pair it with cosmos, zinnias, salvias, and Verbena bonariensis to create natural-looking, dynamic summer displays. Thanks to their open centres, the flowers readily attract bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial insects. They are also excellent for country-style bouquets, where their varied forms and colours add freshness and movement. Regular harvesting and deadheading help extend the flowering season until the first cold weather.
