Tulip mix (Tulipa) ‘Sweet English Rose’ is a 14-bulb assortment of double late tulips with lush flowers resembling small peonies. The mixture combines soft peach-apricot, cream and pale yellow tones with ivory blooms edged and brushed in violet-purple. As the flowers mature, the purple markings may spread farther across the petals, creating an especially attractive colour progression. Large blooms can approach 13 cm (5 in) across and are carried on stems approximately 50 cm (20 in) tall. Flowering occurs in late spring, producing a romantic, full and refined display. The densely layered petals give this assortment the soft, rose-like character suggested by its name.
This combination prefers full sun to partial shade and light, humus-rich, fertile and well-drained soil. In Quebec, plant the bulbs in fall, ideally from September to November before the ground freezes. Set them approximately 150 mm deep and space them about 10 cm (4 in) apart for a suitably full display. Water after planting, then maintain moderate moisture in spring while stems and flower buds develop. After flowering, remove faded blooms but allow the foliage to yellow completely before cutting it back. This important step lets the bulbs replenish stored energy before summer dormancy. Avoid locations that remain saturated after rainfall or during spring thaw, as prolonged moisture can damage tulip bulbs.
With double flowers in peach, cream, ivory and violet tones, this selection is well suited to romantic beds, refined borders, cottage gardens, large containers and cutting gardens. Planted in groups, it creates a generous effect resembling a bouquet growing directly in the landscape. Forget-me-nots, white grape hyacinths, windflowers and silver foliage complement its pastel palette without competing with the blooms. The large flowers are especially decorative in bouquets and can be harvested as the buds begin to open. Tulips are not intended for food use and may be harmful to pets if ingested. This product is offered by Van Noort and presented under the Florissa brand.
