April to May , after all risk of frost.
Open ground method
1Choose a sunny location.
2Loosen the soil and add compost to enrich the soil.
3Plant the tubers 10-15 cm deep , with the eye (bud) facing upwards.
4Space each plant 50 cm apart to promote good air circulation.
5Water lightly after planting and maintain regular humidity.
Jar method
1Use a large container (minimum 40 cm deep) with good drainage.
2Plant the tubers and supplement with a rich substrate.
3Place in full sun and water moderately.
Tip : For faster flowering, you can pre-germinate the tubers indoors 4 weeks before planting.
Maintenance and wintering
Dahlias are not hardy in cold climates (zones 7 and below).
What to do after flowering
1In mild climates : Leave the tubers in the ground and mulch in winter.
2In cold climates : Dig up the tubers after the first frosts, let them dry for a few days, then store them in a cool, dry place until the following spring.
Cut off faded flowers to prolong flowering and encourage new growth.
