Apricot Bubble Gum gladiolus produces long summer spikes filled with large ruffled flowers in apricot, pink, and coral shades. Florets open gradually from the bottom upward, extending the colour display and making it easy to cut stems at the right stage. Narrow, upright, sword-shaped leaves form a green clump at the base. This horticultural cultivar in the genus Gladiolus, family Iridaceae, reaches 100 to 120 cm tall. The eight Van Noort corms create a warm vertical group in sunny borders, cutting gardens, and large containers while supplying luminous stems for bouquets. Closely blended shades remain cheerful without losing their refined, softly layered character.
Plant corms in spring after the last frost once the soil has warmed. Choose full sun, shelter from strong winds, and fertile, loose, freely drained soil. Set each corm pointed end upward about 10 cm deep and space them 10 to 15 cm apart. Water after planting, then maintain even moisture during growth without waterlogging the ground. Staggered plantings every two weeks extend the harvest of flower spikes. Stake discreetly in exposed locations. In containers, use a heavy, deep pot with several open drainage holes to support tall stems during summer rain and wind. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer, which promotes leaves instead of sturdy flower spikes.
Flowering generally extends from July through September. Cut spikes when the two lowest florets begin to show colour, leaving several leaves on the plant to feed the corm. After flowering, allow foliage to yellow, then lift corms before hard frost. Dry and clean them before storing in a cool, dry, dark, frost-free place until spring. Combine Apricot Bubble Gum with burgundy dahlias, cream cosmos, purple sages, peach zinnias, and delicate ornamental grasses. All parts are ornamental and must not be eaten; keep stored corms away from children and pets. Inspect them during storage and discard any that become soft, mouldy, or badly damaged.
