Harmony 'Plum Pinwheels' (Dahlia) brings together three No. 1 decorative dahlia tubers in a contrasting palette of deep plum and crisp white. The double flowers with radiant petals evoke pinwheels, creating a graphic rhythm in both beds and bouquets. Van Noort indicates an established height of 100 cm (39 in), a spread of 50 cm (20 in), and an upright habit. Summer blooming is renewed when flowers are cut regularly. Green foliage highlights the dark and bright tones. The individual cultivars in the mix are not specified, so the proportion of the two colors may naturally vary between packages.
Plant the three tubers in spring after all risk of frost, in a full sun location. Place each tuber about 10 cm (4 in) deep in rich, loose, well-drained soil, then space their centers 50 cm (20 in) apart. Water lightly after planting and increase watering as shoots develop, without saturating the soil. Pinch young stems above three or four pairs of leaves to encourage branching. Low-nitrogen fertilization, early staking, and regular moisture support balanced plants. Protect new shoots from slugs and late frosts.
Harvest flowers when they are almost completely open, as dahlias open little after cutting. Also remove spent flowers to encourage new buds until frost. After the first frost, cut the stems, dig up the tubers without damaging them, let them dry briefly, and store them in a dark, dry, frost-free place. Van Noort classifies this dahlia in hardiness zone 8 and recommends it as an annual in zones 3 to 10. Dahlias can cause mild digestive upset or skin irritation in cats and dogs; keep plants, tubers, cut flowers, and debris out of their reach.
