Arctic Bells Narcissus (Narcissus). The 'Arctic Bells' Narcissus is a rare botanical variety, also known as the hoop-petticoat narcissus (bulbocodium), which captivates with its unique shape, compact habit, and pure white blooms. Its small, ivory-white, petticoat-like flowers, resembling tiny swirling skirts, appear very early in the season and bring a fresh and natural touch to the garden. Ideal for borders, rockeries, or pots, it is ultra-hardy, easy to naturalize, and blooms faithfully every year. Perfect for lovers of botanical gardens, unique bulbs, and understated, elegant atmospheres. Pair with miniature bulbs or pale blue flowers for a soft and poetic garden from late winter onwards.
Plant narcissus in autumn, before the ground freezes, in loose, well-drained soil. Choose a sunny spot or bright partial shade, where the leaves can receive light during their spring growth. Place the bulbs with the pointed end up, at the depth appropriate for their size, then backfill without disturbing them. Water if the soil is dry to encourage root contact. Planting in small groups helps to distribute the blooms throughout the bed. Keep a discreet marker to avoid disturbing the bulbs once the aerial parts have disappeared after their cycle.
After flowering, remove spent flowers while keeping the stems and leaves that are still green. The foliage allows the bulbs to replenish their reserves before dormancy. Wait until it yellows naturally before cutting it, without tying or braiding it to hide it. During growth, water as needed if the soil dries out significantly, especially for a recent planting or in containers. Allow the clumps to establish and divide them only when they become too crowded or flower less. Narcissus are ornamental plants that are toxic if ingested: keep the bulbs separate from edible onions and out of reach of children and animals.
