Striped Beauty Crocus

Striped Beauty Crocus (Crocus vernus ‘Striped Beauty’) stands out with its large white flowers delicately striped with violet, beautifully highlighting a brilliant golden-yellow centre. Blooming from March through April, sometimes during the first mild days of spring, the flowers open widely in sunshine and close again at night or during cloudy weather. Fine, dark green foliage accented with a distinctive silvery stripe provides an elegant backdrop to this luminous display. Growing 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) tall, this hardy Zone 3 crocus returns reliably every spring and naturalizes easily to form charming flowering colonies.

Plant the bulbs from September through November, before the ground freezes, approximately 8 cm (3 in) deep and 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) apart. Choose a location in full sun or light partial shade with light, fertile, neutral to slightly alkaline, well-drained soil. Water lightly after planting to encourage root development, then only during exceptionally dry spring periods. After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow completely before removing it so the bulbs can replenish their energy reserves. Avoid heavy or wet soils, especially during summer dormancy.

Striped Beauty Crocus is ideal for rock gardens, borders, naturalized lawns, pollinator gardens, and plantings beneath deciduous trees. Planted in generous groups, it creates a bright spring carpet whose elegant striped flowers add texture and originality to the garden. It pairs beautifully with grape hyacinths, snowdrops, scillas, and botanical daffodils to create graceful, natural-looking displays. Its nectar-rich flowers provide valuable nourishment for the first bees and other pollinating insects active in early spring. It also performs very well in well-drained containers, but its flowers are grown strictly for ornamental purposes and are not intended for consumption.
