‘Engelhardt’s Matador’ is a dinnerplate dahlia with large, double purple flowers measuring approximately 20 cm across, set against bronze-toned foliage. Growing about 90 cm tall, it flowers in summer and continues until frost when conditions are favourable. Each package contains one clump of dahlia tubers to grow one plant with an impressive floral display.

Plant in spring once the local risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, adding compost if needed. Set the tubers approximately 10 cm deep with the growing eyes facing upwards, and allow about 50 cm between plants. Install a stake at planting time to support the heavy blooms.

Use this variety as a focal point in a garden border or grow it for dramatic cut-flower arrangements. Water at soil level to maintain even moisture without waterlogging, and remove spent blooms to extend flowering. In Canadian regions with freezing winters, lift the tubers after the first light frost blackens the foliage but before the ground freezes, then store them in a cool, frost-free place.
