From bulb to bloom

‘Titan Spectra’ is a dinnerplate dahlia with large, double coral-orange flowers and generous layers of petals. It grows approximately 1 m tall, with blooms that can measure about 25 cm across. Its summer display brings warmth to borders and bouquets; each package contains one clump of dahlia tubers for planting.

Plant in spring after the last local frost, once the soil has warmed. Choose a sheltered position in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Set the tuber clump approximately 10 cm deep with the growing eyes facing upwards, leave about 50 cm between plants, and install a sturdy stake at planting time.

Combine the large blooms with dark foliage or cream flowers. Water at soil level without waterlogging, and remove spent flowers to encourage more buds. In Canadian regions with freezing winters, lift the tubers after the first light frost blackens the foliage but before the ground freezes, then store them in a cool, frost-free place.
