From bulb to bloom

‘Colour Flash’ astilbe stands out for its divided, burgundy-toned foliage, which adds colour even when the plant is not in bloom. Airy pink flower plumes rise above the clump in summer, with a mature height and spread of about 50 cm. Each pack contains one bare root for spring planting in a perennial border or a large container.

In Canada, plant in spring once the soil is workable. Choose partial shade, sheltered from hot afternoon sun, and soil enriched with organic matter that stays moist but drains well. Spread out the roots and position the growth buds about 2.5 cm below the surface. Space plants 50 cm apart, then water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.

Pair this colourful shade perennial with hostas or ferns that enjoy similar growing conditions. Water regularly during dry spells, as the foliage may scorch if the soil dries out. Mulch helps retain moisture around the roots. You can leave the faded flower stems for winter interest and cut them back in spring before new growth begins.
