Blue globe thistle, or echinops, produces rounded violet-blue flower heads above deeply divided, prickly foliage. This summer-flowering perennial brings a sculptural outline to garden borders. Each package contains one bare root for planting.

Plant in spring when the ground has thawed, in well-drained soil. Full sun is preferable, although light shade can be tolerated. Avoid spots where water collects, and leave room around the plant for the clump to develop. Water after planting and during establishment without keeping the soil waterlogged.

The spherical flowers combine well with ornamental grasses and airy perennials, and can be used in bouquets. Wear gloves when handling the prickly foliage. Once established, adjust watering to dry weather and remove spent flowers if you want to limit self-seeding.
