From bulb to bloom

Virginia bluebells, Mertensia virginica, welcome spring with pink buds that open into small blue bells above soft green foliage. This woodland perennial grows approximately 60 cm tall and brings a natural look to shady areas. Each package contains two bare roots for planting.

Plant in spring in shade or partial shade, in rich, humus-filled soil that stays moist but drains well. Prepare a hole wide enough to spread the roots without bending them and allow about 50 cm between plants. Water at planting and avoid sites that become very dry in spring.

Combine it with hostas or ferns, whose foliage will fill the space as Virginia bluebells go dormant in summer. The disappearance of its leaves is normal: mark the position to avoid disturbing the roots while gardening. Maintain moderate moisture in spring and watch for slugs around new growth.
