From bulb to bloom

‘Poulton’s Pride’ rhubarb develops pink-to-red stalks beneath broad foliage, making a productive and decorative perennial planting in the vegetable garden. Its leaf stalks are useful for compotes, pies and cooked desserts. Each package contains one bare-root crown of this variety.

In spring, choose full sun and prepare fertile soil rich in organic matter with reliable drainage. Set the crown with its buds at soil level or slightly above the surface; do not bury the crown deeply. Leave space for the clump and water after planting and during dry spells.

Do not harvest in the first year, allowing the crown to strengthen, and keep picking light during the second season. Remove flower stalks as they appear and retain enough leaves to support the plant after harvesting. The leaves are toxic: eat only the leaf stalks and discard the trimmed leaf blades before kitchen preparation.
