From bulb to bloom

‘Queen Anne’ is an early potato variety with yellow skin and flesh, long-oval tubers and shallow eyes. Its fairly firm flesh suits dishes where the cooked pieces should hold their shape. Each packet contains 500 g of seed potatoes for planting in the vegetable garden.

Plant in spring once the soil has drained and warmed sufficiently, choosing a full-sun location. Prepare loose, fertile, well-drained soil, then set the tubers approximately 10 cm deep and about 30 cm apart. Draw soil around the stems as they grow to keep the developing potatoes protected from light.

Water consistently while the crop forms without leaving the roots in waterlogged soil. Harvest carefully to avoid wounds, and allow the skins to dry before placing storage potatoes in a cool, dark location. Remove all green, damaged or sprouting parts before preparing the potatoes and discard severely affected tubers. Do not eat bitter-tasting potatoes or the sprouts.
