Viburnum lentago
Viburnum lentago, commonly known as nannyberry or sheepberry, is a large deciduous native shrub renowned for its hardiness and ecological value. It develops an upright to spreading habit, often taller than wide, and can form a small tree with age. In spring, corymbs of slightly fragrant white flowers appear, attracting numerous pollinators. These are followed by clusters of edible blue-black fruits when ripe, much appreciated by birds and sometimes used in artisanal processing. Its glossy green foliage turns beautiful purplish-red hues in autumn, enhancing its seasonal ornamental interest. Adapted to well-drained soils and tolerant of various conditions, Viburnum lentago is an excellent choice for country hedges, naturalistic landscaping, and projects promoting biodiversity in northern climates.
