Foxtail amaranth
description
Amaranth 'Foxtail' (Amaranthus caudatus), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds
'Foxtail' amaranth produces long, drooping clusters of bright red flowers all summer long, highly decorative and prized in borders or fresh bouquets. Its graceful habit and abundant flowering make it a popular ornamental variety, ideal for adding movement and color to the garden. Easy to grow, it adapts well to well-drained soils and sunny or partially shaded locations.
Height: 28 to 33 cm
Spacing: 30 to 35 cm
Sowing: Indoor or direct sowing
Exposure: Full sun, Partial sun / Partial shade
Quantity per packet: Untreated, non-GMO seeds
Cultivation method:
Sow directly outdoors once the risk of frost has passed; flowering occurs 6 to 8 weeks after sowing. For transplanting, sow the seeds indoors in early April, pressing them into the potting mix without covering them. Germination takes 5 to 10 days at 20°C (68°F). Grow under lights, harden off, then transplant in late May, spacing the plants 30 to 35 cm (12 to 14 inches) apart. Amaranth prefers well-drained soil and flowers profusely in full sun in regions with cool summers, or in partial shade in warmer areas. Light pruning after the first flowering encourages a second flush of blooms.
