Green Globe Artichoke Romanesco Carciofo – (Cynara scolymus) , offered by Weston Seeds

The Romanesco Carciofo Green Globe Artichoke is a robust variety that produces dark green buds with a slight purple tinge. Although first-year artichokes are smaller and fewer in number, the quality of the harvest improves considerably in the second and third years. The buds are harvested when they are between 5 and 9 cm in diameter, and the edible parts include the fleshy base of the scales and the firm heart. This perennial plant can reach up to 1.5 m in height in one year, bringing elegance and flavor to your garden.

Days to maturity : 80 to 90 days
Fruit size : 5 to 9 cm (3 to 6 inches)
Plant height : 85 to 90 cm (34 to 36 inches)
Plant spacing : 90 to 120 cm (36 to 48 inches)
Exposure : Full sun
Sowing : Indoors, 8 to 12 weeks before last frost

Cultivation method:

Start seedlings indoors 8 to 12 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Sow seeds 1/4" (6 mm) deep in a potting mix, maintaining a temperature of 70 to 80°F (21 to 26°C) to promote rapid germination. When seedlings are 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) tall, transplant them into individual 4" (10 cm) pots and grow on at a temperature of 60 to 70°F (15 to 21°C).

Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors, spacing them 24 to 36 inches (60 to 90 cm) apart and 6 feet (1.75 m) between rows. Plant in fertile, organic, well-drained soil in full sun. Keep the soil evenly moist by applying a thin layer of mulch, increasing it to 4 inches (10 cm) as the plants grow. Protect plants from frost and cold temperatures during their harvest period.
