Sow the seeds indoors about 5 weeks before the last frost date in a soilless mix, maintaining a germination temperature of around 20°C (70°F). Once the seedlings are well established, harden them off before transplanting them outdoors in late April or early May, when the soil has warmed up.
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil, spacing plants 35 to 45 cm (14 to 18 inches) apart and maintaining a distance of 60 to 75 cm (24 to 30 inches) between rows. Water regularly to avoid water stress, which could affect bud formation. Fertilize lightly and frequently to ensure optimal growth.
When the buds begin to form, use the large outer leaves to cover them and protect them from the sun's rays, preventing discoloration. Harvest the buds when they reach a size of 17 to 20 cm (7 to 8 inches) in diameter, carefully cutting them with a sharp knife.
