Cultivation method:

'Pickling Paris' cucumbers thrive in sandy, loamy soil that is well enriched with compost or manure. Before planting, work the soil to a depth of 30 cm (12 inches) to optimize root growth. Wait until the soil temperature reaches at least 18 °C (66 °F) before sowing, as cold soil can slow germination and promote seed rot.

Form hills about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) high and 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60 cm) in diameter. Space hills 4 feet (120 cm) apart. Plant 6 to 8 seeds per hill, 3/4 inch (2 cm) deep. Once the seedlings are well established, thin the plants to 3 or 4 plants per hill.

If space is limited, use a trellis to train the vines upwards, which also helps produce more uniform fruit. Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, which is essential to prevent bitter fruit during hot, dry weather. Harvest cucumbers by carefully cutting them from the vine using a sharp knife so as not to damage the plant.
