Organic 'Polystar' chives (Allium schoenoprasum), offered by the seed company WH Perron

Organic 'Polystar' chives are a vigorous, fast-growing variety , prized for their upright, compact habit and medium-sized leaves with a delicately peppery flavor . Highly uniform, they quickly form beautiful, dense clumps, ideal for regular harvesting. Their fresh, balanced flavor makes them an essential herb in the kitchen, equally delicious raw or cooked.

Perennial and particularly well-suited to container gardening , 'Polystar' chives are perfect for balconies, patios, and small gardens. Once established, they require little maintenance and multiply easily from year to year. Grown in the ground or in containers, they provide a continuous supply of tender leaves from spring to autumn.

Spread: Approximately 20 cm
Quantity per packet: Approximately 200 seeds

Cultivation method:

'Polystar' chives can be sown indoors or directly in the garden .
For indoor sowing, sow 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost , placing several seeds per clump in a well-drained and porous seed-starting mix.
For outdoor sowing, sow in spring as soon as the soil is warmed up , in clumps of 4 to 6 seeds , spaced about 15 cm apart in the row.

When planting in the ground, choose a light, well-drained soil rich in humus . When growing in pots, use a well-draining potting mix and select a container at least 25 cm in diameter . The recommended spacing is 15 cm within the row and 30 cm between rows .

Maintenance and watering:

Once established, chives require little watering in the ground, except during periods of drought or intense heat. In pots, water more regularly, allowing the surface of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. This variety grows easily and is very self-sufficient in the garden.

Harvesting and storage:

For culinary use, cut the flowers as soon as they appear to concentrate energy on the foliage. Harvest by cutting the leaves almost to the ground , up to 4 times per season , which stimulates the growth of new tender shoots.

To preserve chives, wash the leaves, dry them thoroughly, then place them in a labeled freezer bag . They will keep this way for almost a year without any noticeable loss of flavor.

Practical, lively and always within reach!

With its rapid growth, compact habit, and ease of cultivation, organic 'Polystar' chives are an excellent choice for both amateur gardeners and everyday cooks. Versatile, long-lasting, and flavorful, they bring freshness and simplicity from the garden to the plate.
