Dianthus 'Diana' (Dianthus chinensis), offered by the seed company WH Perron
Dianthus 'Diana' is a compact and very floriferous variety, prized for its large, single, slightly serrated flowers , which can reach up to 6 cm in diameter . It offers a vibrant mix of colors that stand out beautifully against dense foliage, forming a harmonious, bushy habit. Its generous flowering extends from spring until the end of summer , providing color and elegance for an extended period.
Ideal for borders , containers , and flowerbeds , this dianthus attracts bees and butterflies while also being heat-tolerant . Undemanding once established, it adapts well to sunny or partially shaded gardens and maintains a neat appearance with minimal maintenance. Some flowers are also edible and fragrant , adding further appeal to the plant.

Sow Dianthus 'Diana' indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost , maintaining a temperature of 18 to 21°C (64 to 70°F) . Lightly cover the seeds with vermiculite and keep the potting mix moist but not waterlogged . Light is not necessary for germination. Use a well-draining, porous seed-starting mix to prevent waterlogging.
Transplant into the garden once all risk of frost has passed. Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of about 30 cm , then enrich it with compost. Gently place the seedlings in the ground, gently loosening the roots if they are too crowded. Adding organic bone meal or a soil activator can encourage root development. Water every 2 to 3 days until well established.
In the garden, choose well-drained , rather dry soil, and a location in full sun or partial shade . Water only in case of prolonged drought .
Maintenance and flowering:
Regularly deadhead spent flowers to encourage new blooms and prolong flowering. Dianthus 'Diana' is low-maintenance and maintains a dense, colorful display of blooms throughout the summer season.
Compact, colorful and easy to achieve!
With its abundant flowering, heat tolerance, and neat habit, Dianthus 'Diana' is an excellent choice for beautifying gardens and containers. Versatile, decorative, and undemanding, it brings charm and vibrancy to landscaping from spring to late summer.
