Summer savory
description
Summer savory ( Satureja hortensis) , offered by the seed company WH Perron
Summer savory is a must-have herb, perfect for adding flavor to your dishes while beautifying your garden. With its narrow, dark green leaves and delicate, pale purple flowers, it adds a decorative touch to rockeries, path borders or herb gardens. Its peppery, slightly spicy flavor makes it an excellent accompaniment to vegetables, meats and sauces.
Latin name : Satureja hortensis
Maturity : Annual
Plant height : 30 cm
Spread : 15 cm
Formulation : Untreated
Companion plants : Garlic, cabbage, beans, onion
Enemy plants : Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cucumber, gherkin, sage
Growing Tips:
Sow directly into the ground as soon as all risk of frost has passed, or start indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds 1/4 inch (0.5 cm) deep, spacing plants 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) apart. Summer savory prefers light, well-drained soil and a location in full sun.
Water regularly, but not excessively, to maintain a light humidity in the soil. Cut the flowers as soon as they appear to prolong the production of tender and tasty leaves.
Harvest and culinary use:
Harvest the leaves as needed, once the plant reaches 15 cm in height. They can be used fresh or dried to flavour soups, stews, vegetable dishes and marinades. Savory is also known for its digestive properties, especially when combined with legume dishes.
An ally in the garden and in the kitchen!
Easy to grow and highly versatile, summer savory is ideal for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. It will not only enhance your dishes, but also your garden with its decorative appeal and ability to repel certain insect pests. Grow it to combine aesthetics and flavors in your outdoor space.
