'Yellow Baby' Watermelon
description
'Yellow Baby' watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds
The Yellow Baby watermelon produces small, 5- to 8-pound fruits with sweet, juicy, and very refreshing golden-yellow flesh. Their green rind encloses a crisp, sweet pulp, ideal for summer desserts or refreshing snacks. This compact variety thrives on a shorter-than-average vine, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens.
Height: 30 to 40 cm
Spacing: 90 to 120 cm
Sowing: Indoor or direct sowing
Exposure: Full sun
Quantity per packet: 20 to 25 seeds, untreated, non-GMO
Cultivation method:
Sow indoors 2 to 3 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors when the soil temperature reaches at least 18°C (64°F). Cover the seeds with 2 to 3 cm (1 inch) of potting soil and keep them consistently moist until germination. Melons prefer warm, rich, and well-drained soil.
Transplant or sow directly in the ground, spacing the plants 90 to 120 cm apart to allow the compact vine to spread well. Water deeply but infrequently, and use mulch to retain soil warmth. Harvest when the fruit reaches its characteristic size and gives off a sweet aroma.
