'Sugar Baby' Watermelon
'Sugar Baby' watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds
The Sugar Baby watermelon is an heirloom variety prized for its small, spherical fruits with a dark green rind and crisp, very sweet red flesh. Compact and productive, it is ideal for small gardens or regions with short growing seasons, while also offering excellent storage potential in the refrigerator. Its refreshing flavor makes it a summer favorite.
Height: 30 to 40 cm
Spacing: 90 to 120 cm
Sowing: Indoor or direct sowing
Exposure: Full sun
Quantity per packet: 20 to 25 seeds, untreated, non-GMO
Cultivation method:
Sow indoors 2 to 3 weeks before the last frost in warm potting soil, or directly outdoors when the soil reaches at least 18°C. Cover the seeds with 2 to 3 cm of potting soil and maintain consistent moisture until germination.
Transplant or sow directly in the ground, spacing the plants 90 to 120 cm apart in rich, warm, and very well-drained soil. Black plastic or organic mulch helps retain heat and accelerates ripening. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage strong root development.
