Red onion 'Tropea Lunga Select'
Red onion 'Tropea Lunga Select' (Allium cepa), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds
The Tropea Lunga Select red onion, an heirloom variety originating from Calabria, produces long, elongated bulbs 3 to 4 inches in length with glossy red skin and sweet, juicy white flesh. Its remarkably mild flavor makes it an exceptional onion for eating fresh, in salads, marinades, or roasting. Highly prized for its crisp texture and culinary versatility.

Sow indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors when the soil can be worked. Sow shallowly in loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Maintain consistent moisture to encourage even, tender growth.
Transplant or thin the bulbs to 10-15 cm apart to allow them to grow well. Water regularly but not excessively, and mulch to retain moisture. Harvest when the stems begin to bend and turn yellow.
