Cultivation method
This squash loves heat and needs organically rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 . Amend the soil with compost before planting to ensure optimal growth.
Sow directly into the ground from late May to mid-June , when all danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep , forming mounds 8 feet (2.4 m) apart , with 4 to 6 seeds per mound . After germination, thin to 3 plants per mound .
If you want an earlier start , start seedlings 3 weeks before the last frost , using biodegradable pots to minimize transplanting stress.
?? Tip : Use a sturdy trellis or pergola to guide the growth of these impressive fruits and prevent them from twisting.
How to cook Sicilian Serpente Squash?
?? Harvested young (less than 60 cm / 24 inches): Its tender texture is reminiscent of zucchini. Ideal sautéed with garlic and olive oil , added to soups and stews , or grated into omelettes.
