Tomato 'Scatolone' (Solanum lycopersicum), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds

The 'Scatolone' tomato is a remarkable heirloom variety, prized for its large, flavorful San Marzano-style fruit. With their dense flesh, low seed content and mild flavor, these slightly flattened red tomatoes are perfect for homemade sauces and preserves. Crack-resistant and producing fruit all season long, this indeterminate variety is a must-have for gardeners and cooks alike.

Days to maturity : 70 to 75 days

Height : 24 to 34 inches
Spacing : 12 to 14 inches
Sowing : Indoors
Exposure : Full sun
Plant habit : Indeterminate
Quantity per pack :  untreated, non-GMO seeds

Cultivation method:

Sow seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected spring frost date. Use a peat moss-based mix and maintain a temperature of 70 to 75°F (21 to 24°C) to promote rapid germination.

When seedlings are 4 cm (1.75") tall, transplant them into individual pots, reducing the temperature to 15 to 18°C (59 to 65°F). Once the danger of frost has passed, usually in late May, transplant them into well-drained organic soil. Space plants 60 cm (24") apart for determinate varieties or 90 cm (36") apart for indeterminate varieties.

Water the soil directly to prevent diseases, and apply a straw mulch to conserve moisture and protect plants from soil splashes. Ensure consistent watering to prevent fruit cracking and blossom end rot.
