Zucchini 'Striato Pugliese' (Cucurbita pepo), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds

The Striato Pugliese zucchini is an old Italian variety prized for its long, ribbed, bright light green fruit. It produces an abundance of flavorful zucchini as well as large, edible flowers, ideal for cooking. Its pronounced ribs create delicious star-shaped slices that are perfect for sautéing or roasting, making this variety a popular choice both in the garden and in the kitchen.

Height: 45 to 60 cm
Spacing: 90 to 100 cm
Sowing: Indoor or direct sowing
Exposure: Full sun
Quantity per packet: 15 to 20 seeds, untreated, non-GMO

Cultivation method:

Sow directly in the garden once all risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up, or start seeds indoors about 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting. Place the seeds 2 cm (1") deep in rich, loose, well-drained soil. Germination usually occurs in 5 to 7 days at a temperature of about 21 to 24°C.

For indoor sowing, provide good light and transplant when the seedlings have 2 to 3 true leaves, after they have gradually hardened off. Space each plant 90 to 100 cm apart to allow for spreading and high yields. Water regularly without waterlogging the soil, and mulch to retain moisture.

The Striato Pugliese produces continuously throughout the summer if the fruit is harvested regularly. Its flowers, highly prized in cooking, can also be picked for various dishes.

A productive and tasty variety for any sunny vegetable garden!
