Seeds can be sown indoors in February in a soilless medium, then transplanted in spring. Sow directly outdoors from mid-April, 8-15mm deep and 15mm apart in rows 30cm apart. Thin to 5cm for cooking onions or 7.5cm for sweet Spanish types. Onions prefer a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Bend the flower stalks to concentrate energy on bulb formation. One packet will sow about 6m of row. Germination occurs in about 15 days.
