The Pickling Classic

Wisconsin SMR 58 Cucumber Seeds (Pickling Type), offered by OSC Seeds

Wisconsin SMR 58 is an heirloom cucumber variety celebrated for its exceptional disease resistance, making it perfect for pickling. Its medium-green fruits, adorned with black spines and tapered ends, provide outstanding pickle quality. A favorite among commercial growers, this variety thrives in Canadian climates like Ontario, Quebec, the Prairies, and the Maritimes. Introduced in 1958, it remains a staple for homegrown cucumbers.

How to Grow:

Direct sow outdoors once the soil has reached at least 18°C. Work the soil to a depth of 30 cm, incorporating compost or well-rotted manure. Form mounds 15–20 cm high, spaced 120 cm apart. Plant 6–8 seeds 2 cm deep per mound, then thin to 3 or 4 plants per mound after germination (7–10 days). If space is limited, train plants to grow on a trellis. Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture and prevent fruit bitterness. Harvest with a sharp knife to preserve the plant.

Wisconsin SMR 58 cucumbers are a reliable choice, perfect for pickles or fresh eating!
