Zinnia mix 'Oklahoma' (Zinnia elegans), offered by seed company WH Perron

The 'Oklahoma' zinnia mix is an annual variety originally developed for cut flower production, but equally remarkable in the garden for its elegant habit and abundant blooms. Each plant can produce up to 25 small, double flowers, approximately 4 cm in diameter, when pinched back, offering an abundance of rich, vibrant, and varied blooms. Its well-proportioned foliage and improved tolerance to powdery mildew make it an excellent choice for long-lasting and attractive summer plantings.

Reaching a height of 75 to 90 cm and a spread of approximately 45 cm, this zinnia is perfectly suited to flower beds, borders, containers, and even for cut flowers. It blooms from June to September , ensuring a continuous splash of color throughout the season.

Farming method

'Oklahoma' zinnias can be sown indoors or directly in the garden. For indoor sowing, start 4 to 5 weeks before the last frost in a light, well-draining potting mix, maintaining a temperature of 20 to 22°C (68 to 72°F); germination usually occurs in 7 to 10 days. Transplant seedlings carefully, as zinnias do not tolerate late transplanting. For direct sowing, sow outdoors towards the end of May, once all risk of frost has passed. This variety prefers full sun but tolerates light shade and requires rich, well-drained soil amended with organic matter.

Growing tips

When transplanting, work the soil to a depth of about 30 cm and incorporate compost to encourage rapid growth. Good air circulation is essential to limit the development of foliar diseases, particularly powdery mildew. Regularly pinching back the plants stimulates branching and significantly increases the number of flowers produced. Regular, but not excessive, watering promotes abundant and continuous flowering.

Harvest

Harvest the flowers when they are fully open to fully enjoy their colors and vase life. Prolific, robust, and versatile , the 'Oklahoma' zinnia mix is an excellent choice for gardeners wishing to combine cut flower production and garden beauty with minimal maintenance and maximum visual impact.
