F1 Hybrid Seeds

F1 hybrid seeds offer a choice of vegetables and flowers produced by crossing two selected parent lines. F1 identifies the first generation of that cross; it does not describe a fruit colour, plant habit or organic growing method. Compare each variety using the seed supplier’s details, including mature size, harvest or flowering period and intended uses. Depending on its individual needs, a hybrid variety may suit garden beds, containers or both. Choose the cultivar around your available space and the conditions you can provide.

For Canadian gardens, follow the packet instructions for sowing depth, temperature and planting dates. Some species benefit from an indoor start, while others can be sown directly outdoors. Harden off seedlings before transplanting, and adjust watering, spacing and support to the selected variety. If you save seeds from an F1 plant, later generations may develop different characteristics from the original hybrid. Compare packet quantities as well, whether you are planning a few patio plants, several vegetable rows or a seasonal flower display.
