Scientific name : Acanthocalycium peitscheriana

Common name : Peitscherian cactus, Variable-spined cactus, Echinopsis cactus

Origin : Argentina

Family : Cactaceae

Genus : Acanthocalycium

Description :
Acanthocalycium peitscheriana is a relatively slow-growing solitary cactus valued for its compact form and variable spines, which often depend on the population. This cactus has spherical or slightly flattened stems, which are green to dull gray-green in color. It is less common in cultivation compared to other species of the genus Acanthocalycium , such as Acanthocalycium spiniflorum or Acanthocalycium violaceum .

The ribs of Acanthocalycium peitscheriana are 17 to 20 in number, well marked, reaching about 1 cm in height, and slightly notched. The areoles are elliptical in shape, with yellow-brown wool on the new areoles. The central spines, 1 to 4 in number, are 1 to 6 cm long, straight or slightly arched, brownish in color that becomes gray with age. The radial spines, usually 6 to 10 in number, are shorter and unequal. This cactus produces bell- or funnel-shaped flowers, 3 to 4 cm in diameter, often white, but also sometimes pastel pink or lilac-pink. The flower buds are covered with long scales.

Plant type : Globular (cactus)

Adult size : Approximately 10 to 15 cm in height, with a similar diameter

Special features :
Acanthocalycium peitscheriana is best known for its thorns that vary in length and number, and its delicate flowers that can be white, pastel pink, or lilac-pink. Not only is this cactus attractive, it is also quite hardy and tolerant of harsh growing conditions. It flowers readily and is relatively easy to grow, even for beginners.

Growing conditions

Light : Direct sun to bright indirect light. This cactus needs plenty of light to stay compact and develop strong spines.

Watering : Water regularly in summer, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Do not overwater, as it is prone to rot. In winter, keep it dry to encourage dormancy.

Humidity : Prefers a dry environment.

Fertilizer : Apply a high potassium fertilizer during the summer to support growth and flowering.

Temperature : Acanthocalycium peitscheriana is fairly cold hardy, being able to tolerate temperatures down to -12 °C if kept dry. During the growing season, it prefers temperatures of 18 to 24 °C.

Substrate : Use a well-draining mix of pumice, Iwamoto akadama, Kyriu, potting soil and charcoal to avoid waterlogging, which is essential to prevent root rot.

Potting : Repot every 2-3 years in the spring, increasing the pot size slightly if necessary. Mix a Bionik transplant fertilizer or 10-52-10 into the soil to encourage good recovery after repotting. Insect frass can also be added to reduce post-potting stress.

Interview

Pest and Disease Management : This cactus is generally disease resistant if grown properly, but it can be susceptible to some pests such as red mites, mealybugs, and scales. Root rot is also a problem if the plant is overwatered or the soil is poorly drained.

  • Red Spider Mites : Susceptible to red mites. Overhead spraying can help control these pests.
  • Scale insects : Scale insects can sometimes develop in new shoots or on roots. They can be treated with specific insecticides.
  • Rot : Rot is a minor problem if the plant is properly watered and ventilated. Fungicides will not be very effective if growing conditions are not adequate.

Propagation : Propagation is usually by seed. Sow seeds after the last frosts of spring. Seeds germinate in 7-14 days at a temperature of 21-27°C. Keep young plants out of direct sunlight until well-rooted.

Toxicity : Non-toxic, but thorns can cause minor injury if not handled carefully.

Specific Uses : An excellent plant for growing in pots, this species remains small and is well suited to cold greenhouses, frames or outdoor rockeries.

Interesting facts or anecdotes : Although it is less common in cultivation than other Acanthocalycium , Acanthocalycium peitscheriana is highly valued by collectors for its hardiness and easy flowering.

Practical advice

Tips for successful plant growing : Make sure to grow this plant in a well-lit area to maintain its compact shape and strong thorns. Water moderately and avoid overwatering, especially in winter. Use a well-draining potting soil to prevent rot.

Common mistakes to avoid : Avoid overwatering, especially in winter. Do not place the plant in a place that is too dark, which could compromise its growth and flowering.
