Scientific name: Aeschynanthus 'Rasta'
Common name: 'Rasta' lipstick plant
Origin: Southeast Asia

Description :
Aeschynanthus 'Rasta' is a distinctive variety of the lipstick plant, known for its thick, wavy leaves, creating a twisted, quirky look. Its trailing stems make it an ideal plant for hanging baskets. Very easy to care for, this houseplant is ideal for adding a lush, tropical feel to your space while requiring little maintenance.

Plant Type: Climbing or Trailing Plant
Adult size: 30 to 60 cm in height
Foliage Type: Evergreen, dark green, twisted
Special Features: Its unique, dense foliage with twisted leaves, along with its bright red flowers, make it very attractive as an indoor ornamental plant.

Growing conditions

Light: It prefers bright indirect light but tolerates medium light. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight, which could burn its delicate leaves.
Watering: Water when the top 2-3 centimeters of soil are dry. The plant tolerates a slight lack of water better than excess moisture, which could cause root rot.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. If the air is too dry, mist the leaves or place the plant near a humidifier.
Fertilizer: Use Bionik 1-0.5-0.3 all-purpose fertilizer for the soil, supplemented with Stymula phytostimulant for foliage and soil. Fertilize every other time during watering from March to August, and reduce fertilizer use during the dormant period.
Temperature: Ideally, between 18 and 24°C. It can tolerate lower temperatures, down to 15°C, but avoid cold drafts.
Substrate: Use a well-drained substrate mix including pine bark, coco coir, coconut husk, medium and fine pumice, worm castings, potting soil and horticultural charcoal. This mix ensures optimum aeration and prevents water accumulation.
Repotting: Repot every 2 to 3 years. Increase the pot size by only 1 to 2 inches when repotting, and use Bionik Transplant Fertilizer or Insect Frass to help reduce post-repotting stress.

Interview

Pruning: Prune regularly to encourage compact growth and remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms.
Cleaning the leaves: Use a soft cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean the leaves and maintain their shiny appearance.
Pest and Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease, but watch for scale insects or spider mites. If necessary, treat with a soapy water solution.
Propagation: Propagation is mainly by stem cuttings in spring. Use Stim-root rooting powder to encourage rooting.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to animals and humans.
Specific Uses: Used primarily as an ornamental plant, it is perfect for hanging baskets or shelves thanks to its drooping habit and unique foliage.

Fun Facts or Trivia: Aeschynanthus 'Rasta' gets its name from the twisted appearance of its leaves, reminiscent of dreadlocks, hence its nickname "Rasta".

Practical advice

Tips for successful plant growth: Provide bright indirect light and avoid overwatering. Use a well-drained substrate to prevent root rot and place it in a location with sufficient humidity if possible.
Common mistakes to avoid: Overwatering and poor aeration of the substrate can lead to root rot. Also avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight.
