Asparagus 'Mary Washington' is a heritage variety that has been prized for over a century for its vigor and generous production of long, tender, flavorful green spears . Cultivation method

Soaking seeds in warm water for 12 hours before sowing is recommended to improve germination . Sow indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost. Once plants are 12 inches tall , gradually harden them off before planting in the ground. Space plants 18 inches apart and rows 3 to 6 feet apart . Deep, rich, well-drained soil , full sun exposure. Asparagus is a perennial , it requires a permanent location and regular maintenance to ensure abundant harvests over the long term.

Harvesting and conservation

  • Light harvest from the second year , then regular harvest from the third year .
  • For optimal conservation , place the fresh tips in the refrigerator , the cut ends in a damp towel or in a jar with a little water .
